Summer Learning Journey - Day 14

This is the last day of my Summer Blogging Journey! I have really enjoyed all the activities and have learn't something new everyday by completing the tasks.

For day 14, I had to choose five landmarks I would most like to visit in my country and why I have chosen it. These are my favourite landmarks in order. I chose the Petronas Towers first because I've heard about it a lot and I've always wanted to visit the tallest buildings in Malaysia.

1. Petronas Towers – Tallest buildings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Summer Learning Journey - Day 13

For day 13, I had to imagine that I am visiting my country (Malaysia) on their national day. I had to choose what I would eat, what I would see and what I would do to celebrate the day.

The national day in Malaysia is called Hari Merdeka or Independence Day. It is celebrated every year on 31 August. I have seen what Nasi Lemak looks like, so I probably would have that. I would see a lot of military men and women in Malaysia who participate in the parades.
I would also go to the concerts to celebrate the day!

Summer Learning Journey - Day 12

For day 12, I had to imagine that I am Mr. Key and I have the power to create laws (rules) that everyone in New Zealand would have to follow. I had to think of three (3) rules that I would make up if I was the prime minister.
These are my 3 rules:

1. Increase the age of legal drinking
2. Lower the tuition fees for University
3. Focus more on cyberbullying

Summer Learning Journey - Day 11

For day 11, I had to watch the three videos for my country, Malaysia. I had to then rate them from best to worst in order from 1 to 3 with the best video as #1 and the worst as #3.

These are my ratings for the videos:

#1 - KRU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5aQX0dkkME

Summer Learning Journey - Week 3 - Day 10

This is the last week for my summer learning journey. I have started off with day 10. For this day, I had to take a picture of myself playing one of the most popular New Zealand sports and upload it along with a short caption describing who is in the picture, the sport I am playing, and why I like playing it.

This is a pic of me playing soccer. I love playing soccer because it has been my favourite sport ever since I was little. I have always just loved playing sports with a ball especially if it is a soccer ball. Soccer is the worlds number one sport. When I play soccer it brings me joy and happiness which is something I always i wanted when playing sports. I also think it is a very good way to excerise and keep fit.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 9

For day 9, I had to think about my school and what I typically do in a day. I had to compare it with the diary of the student from the country that I am visiting. (Malaysia) What is similar between my two school days? What is different? I had to also answer these questions:

  1. The name of the country that I are visiting
  2. Whether I would rather go to school in New Zealand or in that country and why.

The name of the country that I am visiting is Malaysia. I would rather go to school in New Zealand. I find Malaysia schools rather quiet complicating and busy. New Zealand schools are much easier to understand and I'm already so used to everything here. Yes, it would be quiet interesting to go to school in Malaysia, but at the same time, I don't really want to be confused in everything there and it would take a very long time for me to adapt there. Summer Learning Journey - Day 8 bonus

I have decided to complete a bonus activity for day 8.
I had to choose a family member and conduct a short interview. In the interview I had to ask them five questions about themselves:
  1. What is your name?
  2. Where were you born?
  3. How many siblings do you have?
  4. What is your favourite thing about living in New Zealand?
  5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I have interviewed my older sister and here are her answers.

1. Saleha
2. Afghanistan
3. Three
4. New Zealand has a democratic government therefore it safer and also I love natural green environment that we have.
5. If I could travel any where I want to visit Canada during the winter because I love the snow and cold winter. I also have many family members there and would like to pay them a visit sometimes.

Summer Blogging Journey - Day 8

I have continued my summer learning journey today. My task here was to basically introduce my family. These are the questions that I had to answer:

  • How many people are in my family
  • Do I have any brothers or sisters
  • What are their names
I had to also write as much as I can about my family.

In my family there are 6 people. I do have siblings. 2 brothers and 1 sister. My older brother who's name is Tamim, my 6 year old brother names Sahil and my 14 year old sister called Saleha.
My family lived in Afghanistan for 2 years. We came to New Zealand in 2005 and now it has nearly been 11 years since our time here.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 7

For day 7, I had to take a picture of myself doing one of my favourite summer time activities. For my holidays, I love to go to Hamilton and pick berries from there. This is a picture of the berries that I have picked.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 6 Bonus

I decided to also do an extra bonus activity for day 6 of my Summer Learning Journey. In this task I had to do a quick google search or ask someone in your family for a recipe for a traditional New Zealand dish (e.g. steak and cheese pie).
For my traditional New Zealand dish, I chose Pavlova. This is a recipe on how to make pavlova.

Ingredients
  • 6 egg whites, at room temperature
  • pinch of salt
  • 1½ cups caster sugar
  • 2 tsp cornflour
  • 1 tsp vinegar
Topping:
  • 3 punnets fresh mixed berries, eg raspberries, blueberries and hulled and halved strawberries
To make a pavlova you really need an electric beater and egg whites that are not too fresh. If they are the pavlova will weep.
Heat the oven to 180°C (not fanbake). Line a baking tray with baking paper and mark a circle about 16cm diameter with a plate. Place the egg whites into the clean bowl of an electric beater. Add the salt and beat until stiff. Slowly add the sugar with the beater running. Beat for about 10 minutes at high speed until the meringue is thick and glossy – it should be thick enough not to fall from the beater. Last of all, whisk in the cornflour and vinegar. Use a big spoon to drop dollops of meringue into the circled area of baking paper. Form into a circle of meringue, making swirls with the spoon on the top rather than flattening to a neat tidy disc.
Bake at 180°C for 5 minutes then reduce oven temperature to 130°C and cook a further hour. Turn off oven and leave pavlova to cool in the oven.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 6

I am now up to day 6 of my Summer Learning Journey. I have only been in Malaysia for one day. My task was to imagine myself visiting a restaurant with my family for breakfast.
In Malaysia, they normally eat these types of food for breakfast:
1. Fried Noodles
2. Nasi Lemak
3. Nasi Lemak #2

Here are some photos:

The breakfast food in Malaysia is far different from the food we have for breakfast in New Zealand. Usually New Zealanders have are toast, porridge, milo and baked beans. Malaysian food is particularly fried and steamed, while our food isn't... I wouldn't really eat Malaysian breakfast food regularly. It is something that I would rather have for Lunch or Dinner.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 5 bonus

I decided to complete an extra bonus activity for Day 5. In this activity I had to choose five of the words or phrases in my table of words and translate them into Māori or into a Pasifika language of my choice (i.e. Tonga, Samoan, Niuean, etc). I decided to translate my 5 words in Maori:

I would like a taxi - E rite ahau he tēkihi
Do you speak English - E korero koe Ingarihi ?
Is there a phone I could use - He reira he waea i taea e ahau te whakamahi i
How much does it cost - Kia pehea te nui e te reira utu
Thank You - Mauruuru

Summer Learning Journey - Day 5

For day 5 of my Summer Learning Journey, I had to read phrases on how to say hello and ask for directions in the correct language. I had to then write a poem about how I might feel if I was standing in an airport in a foreign country and I didn’t speak the language. Here is my short poem that describes how I might have been feeling (i.e. excited, happy, scared, nervous, etc).

My expectations were no where near the reality I was in
"What if I say something wrong and embarrass myself to the core?"
Questions and questions kept on popping in my head
Making me lose nearly all my confidence

My brain wanted to be back in NZ
While my heart wanted to have an epic adventure in Malaysia
I just wanted all the confusion and curiosity...
To Vanish!

Summer Learning Journey - Day 4

Image result for the fault in our stars book

For Day 4 of my Summer Learning Journey, I had to think about all of the books that I have read over the past year. I had to choose one of my favorites and include the title and author of the book. I also had to provide a short description of it. This is my review of my book:

Title: The Fault In Our Stars

Author: John Green
Description:
The Fault In Our Stars is about a young teenage girl named Hazel who has lung cancer and attends a cancer support group. She is 16 years old and really wanted to reject the idea of her mum sending her to the support group. Soon, she actually thinks the idea of going to the group was a good idea because Hazel meets a young boy named Augustus Waters who had osteosarcoma. They travel to Amsterdam in together one day. While they were on their trip Augustus confesses some serious news to Hazel. Both of their worlds break down...

Summer Learning Journey - Day 3: Bonus Activity

Summer Learning Journey - Day 2 Bonus

For Day 2 of the Summer Learning Journey, I decided to do an extra bonus activity. In this activity I had to use the Travelex currency converter website to find out how much each ticket would cost in New Zealand dollars. I looked at each ticket's cost and found out that the 'Kaula Lampur, Malaysia' - Emirates ticket was the cheapest of them all. It was only $1,069.98. While the most expensive was the 'Ottawa, Canada' - WestJet/Cathay Pacific which was $5,163.43.

These were our steps to follow to find out how much each ticket would be in New Zealand Dollars:

Step 1 – Click on the blue button in the middle of the screen with the two arrows. This will move the words ‘New Zealand – New Zealand Dollars (NZ$$) from the box at the top of the screen to the box at the bottom.
Step 2 – Enter the price of the airline ticket in the ‘From’ box.
Step 3 – Select the currency that you want from the drop down menu in the top box. As soon as you do this you will see the cost of the ticket appear in New Zealand dollars.
Step 4 - Record the cost and then repeat the process for each of the airline tickets.

Summer Learning Journey - Day 2

For Day 2 of our Summer Learning Journey, we then needed to start planning our trip to our country that we chose. We needed to watch a video clip called "Men in Black". Once we watched the entire video, we had to list three things that you need to do to stay safe on an airplane. Here are my 3 ways of keeping safe on a place:

1. Obey instructions from your crew
2. Wear your seat belt properly
3. Loose items that you have with you must be safely secured

If you want to watch the video of "Men in Black" click here.

Summer Blogging - Day 1

For Summer Blogging on day 1, my task was to pick one of 6 countries (Canada, Chile, UK, Germany, Malaysia and New Zealand) to visit. I had to read a page full of facts for each country. When I had chosen my country, I then had to explain why I chose that specific country to travel to. I also needed to remember the country because we would be visiting it each day.

The country that I have chosen is 'Malaysia'. I have chosen this country because it stood out from the other 5 countries as it had the most interesting facts compared to the other countries facts. I also thought the design on the Malaysian flag was very eye-catching!
