Should schools provide breakfast for all NZ Children?
We grow up in a generation where poverty overtakes many New Zealand families. Parents and children face everyday hardships that impact their daily lifestyle, physical well-being, and mental and emotional well-being. One of the hardships that parents face are being able to provide breakfast for their children. Approximately 15% of children go to school without having breakfast. That is almost about 55,000 children every single day!
Students who aren’t provided with breakfast are most likely to be switched off from their learning in class. Kids won’t get the nutrition they need to stay focused and energised, so this would cause massive drops in their education, since they won’t be able to concentrate on what’s being taught in their classroom. Their learning environment would be tampered with, and would lead to massive impacts in their grades - jeopardizing their education!
It is scientifically proven that breakfast helps you maintain a more healthy body and mind. All a kid needs is a bowl of weetbix to keep them energised and enthusiastic in the morning! It helps them become motivated to participate in sports. Imagine how unhealthy kids would feel if they skipped breakfast every. If children don’t get the proper nutrition in their system, it would cause massive drops in their health and well-being.
Students that aren’t provided with breakfast become emotionally unstable. They experience a whirlwind of emotions: Such as jealousy, hatred, rage, and sadness. Children feel hatred towards other classmates and friends whose parents are able to give them their morning nutrition while they aren’t provided with it under certain circumstances. They envy those who are energised and full, while they are hungry, tired, dysfunctional, and lacking in energy. This envy leads to negative emotions, and a change in their social and active life.
Breakfast determines whether children will be active and properly engaged in their learning for the morning block. That is why our final opinion and perspective on this debate is for students that attend school to be provided with breakfast. This would lead to an enthusiastic, energized, and focused student! Breakfast needs to be provided! Don’t you agree?
